The sound of a loud crash turned his blood cold. Emma!
The front door was wooden, old, with a flimsy deadbolt. Thunder boomed, and Reed took advantage. He rammed the door with a well-placed kick. His heel screamed in protest, but the wood splintered.
“Come on, come on…” He focused his energy on the weak spot he’d created. He slammed into the door again. It shuddered and gave way.
He entered the house, his flashlight moving over everything. A banister leading upstairs. A dining room to his right. A living room to his left. His breathing was ragged, but the hand holding his weapon was steady.
Which way? Upstairs or toward the back of the house?
He paused, straining to listen. There. A noise coming from the kitchen. He raced down the hallway. Someone was coughing.
His flashlight caught a dark figure bolting out the back door. Reed swung to his left. Emma sat on the tile floor, one hand holding her neck. Her face was red and her long hair stuck out in all directions. Relief replaced the terror in her expression when she caught sight of him.

The Lost Lieutenant

“One does not say no to the Prince Regent.”

When I first saw this book I knew that I had to read it. The Lost Lieutenant is a novel written by Erica Vetsch and I loved it. The cover immediately drew me in and once I read the blurb, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. It is one of my new favorite Regency Christian novels!

The Lost Lieutenant is about Evan, a soldier turned Earl. He was given the honor of becoming an Earl of Whitelock because he saved the life of someone the Prince Regent cares about. He saved the life of the Prince’s godson, if only he could remember saving the Prince’s godson or even what he was doing. The next thing Evan knows, he finds himself an earl, the master of an estate, and a husband to a woman he knows nothing about.

First of all, the cover features Evan, which I loved. It is not often that you see a male on the cover of a book like this, but it was perfect. Evan drew me in from the beginning, I felt for him as he tried to gain back his memories, learn how to be an earl and be a good husband. But things are always more complicated than they look.

Diana was a perfect match for Evan. She had been so used to evil men that she didn’t know what to think about Evan. But as she got to know him, she saw that he was a kinder man then she could have thought. Once they truly got to know each other, they began to care for each other. Evan trusted Diana, he helped build her up. While Diana helped him stay positive and helped in as he tried to get his home together.

I can’t say enough about how much I liked this book. It was so hard to watch Diana and Evan struggle through their marriage and getting their home together. But I wanted to cheer when everything started to work out. This book had a knight in shining armor, an evil to defeat, and a love story.

I would definitely recommend The Lost Lieutenant. It was a clean regency christian book, that left you wanting more. I am so excited for the next book and I can’t wait to read about Marcus!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Finding Peace in Wishing Bridge

This is the first book that I have read of Ms. Herne, but I really enjoyed it. This was a really cute and sweet read. It had just enough action to keep me interested but not enough to scare me.

I really liked meeting Jazz, she was such an interesting character. It was so cool for me to see how she learned to overcome her fears. She was strong, when she had to be but she also knew when it was time to let others help. She was also such a nice person, she did not let her fears stop her from loving and helping others.

I really loved Garret, he was a sweetheart. He loved Jazz and he wanted to protect her as much as he could. He wanted to be the kind of man that she could trust. It was also really sweet how he cared for Andrew and tried to help him without hurting Andrew’s pride.

I loved the other characters, Max, Jill, and the girls (Kelsey and Thea). They really helped make this a better book. Jill and Max were awesome characters. They helped Jazz grow and were there for her, but they didn’t try to coddle her.

I am so glad that I took the chance on this book. I really want to read the first two books now. I would totally recommend this book. If you want a clean Christian book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but is still a quick read, this is the book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Book Review:

I really enjoyed this book, though it was not my usual genre. I was so happy to find it really entertaining! It definitely kept me reading, and I was, at different points, so nervous for the characters.

I really felt for Kate, she was really relatable in the circumstances. If anything like that happened to me, I probably would react like her, super out of my depth. She definitely grew throughout the book, even though it really only spanned a few days. Kate and Alex have to learn to trust each other, although they really do not know the other.Though they were both trying, it was quite an crazy adventure they were on.

Alex was really focused, but he was such a sweet guy! He was a protector, looking out for so many. Though he was very intense and could be gruff, he and Kate began to open up to one another.

The story felt really possible, which made it even more suspenseful. It is a concept that is very relevant and a little frightening. The book was a little on the shorter side, though it did feel completed. I appreciate how she incorporated their faith, though I would wish it was a little more prominent. They were still growing in their faith. It was cool how they learned to trust more and more in God and His strength. I do hope that we get to see more of Kate and Alex, I would love to see their future.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Book Excerpt:

My ring finger had twitched, reminding me that there would be no ring. I had nearly knocked over my chair trying to stand up. I didn’t cry in front of him. I just left. I didn’t look back. When I got home, I sat on the kitchen floor, my knees drawn to my chin, my heart pounding so fast that I couldn’t catch my breath. Break up? He thinks we should break up? Is this possible?

Riley. My Riley. With his steady, dark eyes and that matter-of-fact way he approached life. With his driven ambition and focused personality and that small, sweet smile he saved only for me. What had happened to the steadfast Riley I knew? He’d always been so sure about us. I’d never known him to have the slightest doubt about himself, his career, about me or our future together. The shiver inside my heart scared me. Because even the tremble in his voice hadn’t camouflaged that part of him I recognized so well. The low tone in his voice and the truth in his brown eyes told me that he’d already thought this through. He knew what he was doing. I shook off that feeling and squeezed my eyes shut. I leaned back against the refrigerator and felt the cold seeping into me.

My thoughts raced back and forth from: This is temporary. He’s afraid of making a real commitment to me. He needs some space. It’s going to be fine. He’ll come back to me; to: What just happened to my life? Has Riley lost his mind? I can’t start over again! First dates, blind dates, lonely Friday nights—that was all supposed to be behind me! I should be trying on wedding gowns and choosing flatware!

My mind had replayed Riley’s words over and over. Somewhere around the hundredth time, I felt something inside me dissolve and I started to cry.

Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.

Author Interview

  • 1. Where did you find the idea behind this book?
As I explored the world of London during the Great War, I found myself intrigued not only by the codebreakers of Room 40, but also by the pilots and nurses of the era—to groups of people that have many stories already told about them, it’s true. But I decided to give mine a twist and feature a grounded pilot who ends up in
Room 40…and a nurse who isn’t afraid to face down an admiral to save those she
  • 2. What made you want to be a writer?
I’m one of those people who have been writing stories since I first learned how to
write. =) Even in grade school, I knew I wanted to be a writer. For years I would
say I wanted to “write books and…” The “and”s changed over the years, but the
writing never did—so finally I gave up on those other thins and focused on where
my passion really was. And here I am!
  • 3. Which character are you most like?
If we’re talking from all my books, then I’m most like Ella from A Lady
Unrivaled. But if we’re talking about On Wings of Devotion then I’m probably
most like Arabelle. Not called to medicine as she was and certainly not in her life
situation, but I think a bit of my outlook crept in there through her eyes!
  • 4. What do you want people to take away from this book?
That even when the darkness weighs the heaviest, the Lord is our Light.
  • 5. How did you get the ideas for the characters?
Oh, these characters have been with me for many years! I first envisioned them in
pirate-ridden Jamaica many, many years ago. I then moved them into a Regency
story that went nowhere, and finally plucked them out of that and into these
pages, where they found their true home.
  • 6. Do you take inspiration from your life for plot points, characters, etc?
I’m sure I do—life is fodder for fiction, after all, LOL. But there was nothing in
this one that came specifically from life, other than from the books I read.
  • 7. Our family also homeschools and our house is constantly a flurry of activity, what
are your tricks for getting into your story and finding time to write?
My writing time is mostly in the morning, before I’m really needed very much by
the kids. And one day a week, I go somewhere else to write. These days, the kids
are old enough that they can watch themselves for a few hours if my hubby isn’t home, and they’re also mostly self-directing in school. But it definitely takes discipline on my part!
  • 8. Your Codebreakers series is based on a real group of people, who have amazing
abilities with numbers and codes. Are you also interested in codes and secret
“Interested in,” yes…academically. I love stories about and including that sort
of thing. But I make no attempts to actually do them, LOL. I’m a perfect example
of a twist on the old adage: “Those who can’t do, write novels about it.”
  • 9. Do you speak any of the languages in your books (Spanish, German, French)?
Not well, LOL. I had 3 years of French in high school and two more in college, but
the focus was on translation, not communication…so I know just enough to get
myself in trouble there, LOL. I often rely on my foreign-exchange-student-
brother, Sascha, to help me with tricky German (he lived with my family for a
year when I was 11). And for the Spanish, I turned to another friend who’s fluent.
It was a relief, I admit, to write this second book in the series that had no foreign
language…though I am fascinated by language, hence why they always make it
into my series at some point or another!
